Health and fitness – What is CLA ?

What Is Conjugated Linoleic Acid and How It Differs from Linoleic Acid?

The molecular structure of Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) is different from linoleic acid structure.

In scientific terms, CLA is an isomer of linoleic acid. The rearrangement of molecular structure enables CLA to have a totally different chemical function in our body, such as facilitating reduction in accumulated body fat and promoting muscle growth.

Naturally, our body cannot convert enough linoleic acid into CLA, so we need to intake it through our diet. Deficiency of CLA causes dietary fat to get stored as physical fat in the body, which over time, results in obesity.

Benefits of Conjugated Linoleic Acid Weight Loss

In addition to overall health benefits, CLA has the following three main benefits:

Weight loss – CLA supplements are found to be highly beneficial in promoting fat loss. They also help you gain the healthy lean body mass that makes you look lean and healthy.

CLA acts by normalizing the action of two hormones leptin and resistin. These hormones have been found to affect appetite, fat storage and sensitivity of insulin in our body. Studies with animals have shown that CLA can reduce their food intake up to 30 %.

CLA has been found to be more effective in targeting visceral adipose tissue (VAT), especially abdominal fat. This is why many health practitioners prescribe Conjugated Linoleic Acid supplement to treat belly fat in young people.

Muscle building – CLA supplements have also been shown to promote muscle growth and suppress muscle wasting. It increases secretion of growth hormones to increase blood circulation to muscles and adipose tissue. This helps in improving the functioning of muscle and mobilization of fat from adipose tissues.

Anti-cancer agent – CLA’s role in retarding and preventing many types of cancer is still under investigation. It’s been studied for treatment of many types of cancer such as breast cancer, prostrate cancer, and lung cancer. CLA has been shown to interact with carcinogens in different ways, which still need to be identified.

Increased calorie expenditure (thermogenesis) – CLA has been proven to increase metabolic rate of our body that helps us in achieving our weight loss goals.

Antioxidant – CLA’s role as an antioxidant has been studied in relation to retarding cancer causing oxidative processes.

In addition to these benefits, CLA is also known to suppress catabolic hormones and aid thyroid treatment.” by – Linoleic Acid.

Watching what you eat can also include monitoring your intake of beef and dairy products.

However, if you cut down too much on those foods, you could be missing a nutrient called conjugated linoleic acid (CLA).

This natural derivative of omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid is not manufactured in the human body and is best sourced from the diet.
